Missions & Features

Multi-mission capability

The AW159 is capable of performing a wide range of battlefield roles including Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR); ground attack, close air support, Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC); Search and Rescue (SAR); and cargo resupply.

Cabin space provides the option to equip the helicopter with auxiliary fuel tanks without compromising weapon carriage. It also enables secondary role capability such as movement of specialist teams or Command and Control (C2) operations, delivering greater operational flexibility than a dedicated attack platform. Even in the armed reconnaissance role, the AW159 offers firepower capability and additional possibilities that are not usually available on combat helicopters. Modern mission sensors afford excellent tactical and threat awareness at stand-off ranges within contested environments.

Outstanding technology

With a reduced radar and infrared signature platform, Low Probability of Intercept Surveillance Radar, Integrated Defensive Aids Suite and crew and fuel system ballistic protection, the AW159 offers class-leading technological features in a battlefield-proven 5th generation aircraft. Capable of conducting surveillance at stand-off ranges and, when armed, the helicopter can deliver attack capability against asymmetric, armoured and fortified targets. The integrated video downlink and Tactical Data Link (TDL) enable the AW159 to disseminate information across the digital battlespace and conduct collaborative operations with uncrewed systems.

Safety and survivability

With engine infrared suppression, a radar signature-reducing structure, low transmitted emissions, ballistic protection and comprehensive self-protection measures, the AW159 can be operated in the most demanding threat environments while providing high levels of survivability. These advanced features enable the AW159 to meet the requirement to operate autonomously in harsh weather and hostile locations. AFCS Wings Level features plus extensive redundancy in structures, avionics and critical systems, combined with a proven 30-minute run-dry transmission capability, ensure the highest standards of safety in all conditions.

Ease of maintenance

To maximise operational effectiveness, it is essential to minimise the maintenance burden. With this in mind, the AW159 is specifically designed to facilitate direct interventions in the field, providing support equipment and minimising personnel involved. The aircraft has a sophisticated, fully integrated analysis and diagnosis system for potential failures, accompanied by digital technical publications to support operators, reducing intervention times and containing costs.
